6TH DAY-FLYING BOAT MUSEUM

October 3, 2018

After leaving Killarney, we headed north to the Cliffs of Moher.

On our way there, we stopped  in Foynes, at the Foynes Flying Boat Museum. It has a full sized replica of the Boeing B314 Pan Am Clipper flying boat. Foynes was the hub of aviation activity between North America and Europe during WWII.   It was christened by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1939, becoming the 1st commercial passenger plane to fly between the US and Europe over the North Atlantic route.  It also carried Franklin Roosevelt to the historic Casablanca conference with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in Jan 1943. It was very luxurious with a 14 seat dining room, honeymoon suite and sleeping berths for all passengers.  Certainly a lot different than today's planes, we only wish!!

They served 7 course meals out of this tiny galley.

Cockpit certainly looks alot different than today's planes

This is also the place that Irish Coffee was invented. In 1943, Chef Joe Sheridan, mixed a little Irish Whiskey in coffee to rejuvenate tired and cold passengers. The rest is history. Of course, we all had an authentic Irish coffee mixed the correct way. YUMMY
